Everything and everyone is either over, under or properly rated, based on your subjective and biased opinion. No artist nor work can be properly rated, because we all have different beliefs regarding them. So saying things like “so and so, artist is better/worse than this artist” just is not a good claim to make. Frankly, saying such things make you seem ignorant. But by any means we can have a conversation and share ideas regarding this topic, but you can never win an argument that is so littered by personal opinion and emotion. There is nothing wrong for me to say Micheal Jackson is overrated, because to me he does not resonate with me nor is he any bigger than say Drake. Which I do not value as the best rapper nor pop artist.
To me, star wars is way overrated, when I can say the universe of Star Trek is way better and more intriguing, but i would not rate either as anything close to my favorite cinema.I could easily make the case for Captain BeefHearts musical ability being greater than Drake’s but depending on how you weigh musical ability against cultural relevance, poplarity and ease of enjoyment that can make captain beefheart a better or worse artist than drake.
In conclusion, I personally do not believe in lists as they only represent your personal beliefs at that very moment, not in the future, not in different situations, nor does it compensate for the situations that you may enjoy the music and draw emotions of endearment towards this music itself, which in turn can make it better or worse. Do not try to be biased, because frankly, you cannot.
